Cassandra was walking her dog down the road of the neighborhood. She senses something fishy about her new neighbors. The people around here don’t come out so often. Only a little of them would get out of their house to do some groceries. Besides than that, they will just keep themselves busy inside their house. Not that she cares, but being the only newcomer at this town, she expected something more friendly and welcoming from them. Not more than that.
At 7.p.m, she went home to prepare dinner.
While preparing the meatball spaghetti herself, there was a knock on the door.
She opened the door.
No one there.
‘Ahhh...maybe the kids around here are playing fool to their new neighbors like me’ she thought to herself.
On the next morning, she woke up earlier to jog with her dog. She poured herself a cup of café latte.
After jog, on her way home, she passed by the fish market to buy something for dinner because she called her sister, Meredith to come over for dinner besides accompanying her tonight.
She found most of the fishes were rotten and hard to find the fresh one.
She felt a bit emotional about it and went to ask one of the fishmongers there.
Cassandra: Why do you still sell those rotten fishes? It is not nice, you know.
Fishmonger: Because you are rotten enough. Hahahaha! (His smug laughter was followed by the other guys there)
Cassandra’s face turned red and started to walk away.
She went home with the feeling of disgust and angriness.
That night, she just cooked a simple dish for dinner.
A chicken salad and mashed potatoes. With the red wine.
She knows it. Meredith would love the wine the most.
Later that evening, her sister came.
Cassandra was so happy to see her sister came and hug her sister gleefully.
She didn’t even bother to look at her sister’s expression.
Meredith: Thank God you are still alive!
Cassandra: Ha!ha! Nice try. But I don’t bother to take that jokes seriously, sister.
Meredith: No, I mean it, Cassie. How the hell in the world you could live here, by the way?
(Meredith started to take her seat on the sofa)
Cassandra: Yeah, I know they are all weird and stuff. These neighborhoods are totally…
Meredith: These neighborhoods? Is there any?
Cassandra: What do you mean?
Meredith: There are no such things, Cassie. You are living in the middle of a jungle. I came all the way here with the forest’s Rangers. Without them, I’d lost. Plus, this place’s so damn scary, you know, like…ghosts are everywhere. Let’s get out of here.
(Cassandra didn’t blink an eye. Her face turned white.)
